I’ve sometimes heard photographers mention “back-button focus” but hadn’t quite figured out what they meant. well, lucky for me, i stumbled upon melissa jill photography’s blog and found her FAQ posts to be SO very enlightening. With a Canon camera, here are the steps that she shares:
“1. To do this, go to custom function 4 and set it to setting 1. (setting 0 is default)
2. Turn your AF setting to AI Servo. Leave it there from now on and never take it off.”
I’m still playing with it, but am finding it is so very nice to have your focus stay right where you want it for as long as you want it. with shutter button focus, you lift up your finger and the focus is gone–pshhhh. tough for you. but here, you can push that back button (the one with the * over it) and there it is! which is so nice for recomposing shots.
here’s some of the results of my playing with different focal points using the back-button focus. you should give it a try, too!
by the way, what do you guys think of the new layout? i’m playing with different themes, because my widgets were all the way at the bottom before and no one could see the links. let me know your thoughts!
